How long is a leader? I have been using 600mm tails of unleaded braid on my solid bag rigs..to me a leader goes back to the reel but after reading something this evening I am no longer sure.

It totally depends on the type of leader.
A shock-leader wants to have a few turns on the reel.
A lead-core leader might be anything from a foot to 6 ft long.
Your unleaded is defo a leader of sorts mate.

Thank you. I will have to change things about as am fishing a lake with a leader ban. I just always thought of then as a shock leader.

Leader bans generally cover everything mate. Usually time to dig out the tungsten tubing, horrible stuff 😂

Get some tungsten tubing and thread it while it is dry, don't risk your ticket.

Basically any different line attached to the mainline however long is a leader.
I use a 2metre length of Amnesia on my feeder rods attached to braid as a shock absorber, and a 4 metre snag/rubbing or casting leader on my carp rods.
All are types of leader
