Question on wafter rigs - should the hook sit flat on the lake bed or hover on / just above the bed?

depends on what youre fishing over really
i like it laying flat personally, but if raised the hook is more in the 'Claw' type position - id tend to try and use a beaked point hook for this just in case (straight point could easily burr - especially hand sharp hooks)
try both ways and see whats suits your style / venue

Whilst stalking I've seen fish spook off baits just hovering over the lake bed. However pin them to the bottom and they are taken almost straight away. For that reason I always have my Ballanced baits or wafter on the bottom. I've even seen carp come in and nudge those baits that hover over the bottom then swim off.

i tend to have mine flat, my thoughts are if the piont is gentlely wafting and rubbing on the bottom it over time take the edge off the point, or if fishing over leafs/debris its possible it could catch on a leaf ot twig with movement. if i wanted the hook to be sitting like a claw id use a very low popup on a multi for instance

exactly pop up everytime if the bottom has debris on it, or use a small pva stick to protect the hook from getting snagged up.
Watched one of Terry Hearns videos the other day, he was fishing Wafters and said he liked the hook to lay flat, if he reeled in In the morning and the hook point had not gone a little rusty ( where he'd sharpened it) then he knew the hook and been sitting on top of the silkweed.

Had that damaged point on gravel, with a hook not on the bottom and moving, flat on bottom 4 me, don't use wafters unless its clear bottom

All sounds a bit faffy to me
Don't overthink things
If the hookpoint is damaged, just brush it up a bit with a fine stone
