I'm positive as Boycie has said that this thread was about Leadclips being fixed or running. Being as I feel that using a lead clip running is not safe I gave a safer alternative in run rings, Simples!😉

Only Dannyuk is still not convinced, and sadly the debate got personal, for which I am sorry. Sorry for you that you Carpe-diem can't get it, and sorry that to others I got dragged down to your level.

I should have remembered that you should never argue with an idiot...

I still cant believe all you idiots that are still replying still are not understanding what the difference between a running rig is and a semi fixed lead clip which is a type of bolt rig .
I don't need telling how safe you think running rigs are as I'm not down at your level of understanding
Some of you don't even know the difference between a semi fixed , running or fixed lead rig so why go on and on on about running rigs when this thread is about lead clips fixed in place or not ...( semi fixed ) . What the **** has that got to do with running rigs ?
A running rig is the simplest form of an angling rig hence why boycie knows his running rigs well , if any of you had any sense you'd see this thread is about lead clips , yes that's right , lead clips ffs !!!

That's where the confusion starts . A lead clip is designed to house a swivel , if you push the swivel in without fixing it with the peg or use a lead clip that has no pegs , it creates a bolt rig effect so is totally different to a lead clip with the peg in the swivel . Line is able to move after the initial bolt effect through the lead clip so the fish can't use the lead to get free and you would get similar indication as a running rig .
As I've said all along it's not a running rig , if I wanted to achieve a totally running set up I'd use a running rig

I think the term semi fixed is basically redundant. If something runs along the line, it's a running rig. If it doesn't, it is a fixed rig. Either way both can be made safe, both can be made deadly

I think the term semi fixed and fixed deserves it's own thread on what people's thoughts are on them and their thoughts of what they mean to be honest Ian

Maybe Andy. I thought the term semi fixed came into angling back in the 80s, when people actually used permanently fixed leads sometimes, it was brought in when those little tulip beads came about and people created the semi fixed system whereas the lead would come free of the bead when needed. To me the rig what you are mentioning doesn't really fall into that category as it isnt really fixed for more than a split second, and comes free when a fish runs off, as opposed to the lead getting caught up therefore causing it to release. On the other locked thread I said I didn't think running lead clips are much of an issue, but thinking more into it I think they are an unnecessary potential problem. If there was something causing the line to break, and coil or whatever causing something to prevent the whole clip and tail rubber to slide off the lead it would be impossible for the lead to drop. In theory a fish is towing around a lead clip with lead, and a length of line to the hooklink. The lead gets snagged up in whatever, the fish continues to swim until the line is tight to the snagged lead. Because the lead is snagged the fish keeps pulling, but the coil/weed/branch at the end of the line wedges against the back of the tail rubber, therefore actually pulling the rubber on tighter, and making it impossible for the lead to drop. I don't use running rigs for carp fishing ever so this is all theory. Would it not be a safer option to use a standard running kit with the c clips, and to simply tie the running ring to your hooklink swivel with 1lb line? That way you still get that little shock effect, then the light mono snaps, creating about as safe a running rig as you can get? .

It wasn't that long ago that lead clips didn't have locking pegs or the hybrid inbuilt Korda jobbies, you pulled the clip over the swivel until it clicked but quite often the clips would come away from the swivel after a take or even on a cast and nobody worried about them running back then they were a new way of attaching the lead as a semi fixed option that a lot of anglers bought into as it allowed you to change the weight quick and simple without having to re-rig same as the new run rig kits , all a load of balderdash if you ask me any crack off or even worse somebody pulling for a break no matter how safe a rig is has the potential for the trailing line to get caught up and tether a fish.

Go back even further it was quite common place for anglers to pinch on a swan shot above the running Arsley bomb to create a bolt effect when the lead hit that, as with everything time moves on and things hopefully become safer or as safe as they can be, I feel this is more a debate about running over semi fixed and so long as there is no obstruction above any carrier of the lead you are doing your best to fish in a safe manner in my opinion, but if it stops you sleeping at night free lining in the edge is a deadly method.

The past is the past though chap, so not really sure what the relevance of that comment is? After all people used to retain fish in spud sacks, hold them up with fingers in the Gill covers, I even remember reading of someone taking a live carp in a spud sack, on the footplate of a moped, to the butchers to get weighed. All perfectly acceptable at the time, but now not even nearly.

I'm not advocating old methods just using them as a reference especially the original type lead clips systems which many companies still sell like this now and unintentionally can become free running but doesn't stop thousands from using them generally because of cost and they can get 20 cheap tackle ones over say 10 Fox pinned versions, my point is anything with add on's on a line above the hook be it free running or semi fixed has the potential to cause a tethered fish just the line in itself hence the free lining quip.

At the end of the day not one carp angler has a conscience we may be going out with the best intentions of looking after our quarry but worry not about the fact we are towing its own body weight around by the front of its head for however long for our own pleasure.

Your reference for potato sacks and mopeds was recited in Redmire Forever by Kevin Clifford and taking the fish in a soaked hessian sack into the grocers in Ross on Wye and then returning it to the lake I'm not sure however it was on a moped it could of been a push bike possibly by Tom Mintram (the captor) I can't remember now a long time since I read it.

Anyway can't stop I'm off to club a few seals this carp fishing is so humane.
