If you disagree with me then argue or discuss the issue if you are capable of it. Petulant childish responses are pointless and make you look foolish.

"There is a boat within 30 seconds of each peg"
Your lake your rules but you will get anglers who are petrified of getting in a boat and out on the water so first question to any old and new anglers should be do you have a problem with this and then if yes you have a decision to make.
I'll dive straight in a boat and don't have a problem with it but have a few mates that wouldn't entertain it at any cost, then you also have the scenario with people fishing in the recent storms personally I wouldn't like to see anyone out in a boat in those conditions they could also be the only angler at the lake, so what's the solution personally if the fish is solid and they've put the rod in the rest giving enough time for it to start moving again and it hasn't leave it until they can contact someone, "who you ideally" to come and aid with getting the fish or rig free at least then you know everything possible has been done to stop depositing leads and rigs in your lake, in your absence possibly have one or two trusted and likeminded members on hand to be contacted .

I've always been a very strong advocate of when I go fishing “Leave nothing behind what so ever” and always included Leads as well, I utterly hate losing them even by accident.
Dropping Leads intentionally is something I would never dream of doing regardless of where I'm fishing, if the weed is so bad that I would need too I won't fish that area – fish safety is paramount in my view, remove the weed.
But I've yet to find a dead tethered fish caused by a Lead – everyone I ever found dead ,all had one common denominator Leadcore!
But I would be very careful with the boats if I was you , as the saying goes “When the cats away the mice will play” there's always that one stroke puller who will take his rigs out in a boat to areas most sensible anglers would not dream of doing, when nobody is about. My boats are chained up at both Lakes, only I have a Key.

Never dropped a lead and have always believed it is a ridiculous practice. You are deliberately causing harm to the lake and its environment.
I have fished weedy lakes at distance and with good sense have never had an issue with running rigs or helicopter rigs. The same with Barbel fishing on the river if a fish weeds you good angling practice walking a few paces downstream frees the fish.

I wholly agree about the leadcore comment, but have a memory that includes fixed lead systems pre- semi fixed days, when fish were totally unable to eject the lead, leads locked onto the mainline/hooklink swivel with snap links, or even a lead fixed in place between swivels, (which we know are a death rig) so in the event of a break, fish were trailing lead, line and rig, must be 1980's time.
The other obvious problem is tail rubbers jammed or glued on leadclips, an item of tackle I personally don't like.
I have freed a number of fish tethered on leadcore from snags myself, both from a boat and by having to wade in.
In terms of boats, on my new syndicate, there are boats if a fish gets caught up in weed. You can only use them if there is someone else on the water, and life jackets must be used.

Not trying to dig you out personally Nick, but this is a good example of something I see a lot on here that seems incredibly contradictory.
It's everyone's opinion that it's downright sacrilege to drop a lead on a helicopter as it could leave the fish trailing more than a link. Fair... but if that's the argument I assume every one of you exclusively uses helicopters that keep the lead, for every element of your angling?! Nonsense... half the guys/gals on here are forever singing the praises of running rigs for a start.
Nick, you say yourself that you use/used inlines in weed. What happens if you get cut off mate? And any of you that use clips, running rigs etc?
Regardless of the lead being on or off, a lead clip, running rig or inline setup will 100% leave the fish trailing line/leader in the event of a cut off. Exactly the same as a heli-safe that's set to drop the lead MIGHT (at least there is a chance, however small, that the bead could discharge).
Why do people preach the helicopter thing so often but advocate the use of lead systems that, in the event of a cut off, result in the exact same situation? I'd even argue that it's worse because it's guaranteed?!
I've never seen anyone saying “YOU SHOULD NEVER USE A LEADCLIP”.

And that is exactly why I now exclusively use heli rigs, the only set-up that the fish has at least a chance of shedding any trailing line

As far as naked setups yeah I agree, but most use leaders with heli setups and that's where the risk goes up. I use Leadclip for 99% of my angling, but never with a leader. If I need a leader I'll use a heli but don't like them as I've found I drop way more fish on them compared to Leadclip setups (no idea why tbh). I use the Leadclip as I want the lead to drop if it becomes caught up, not just for the sake of it. Not something you can do with a heli. I think if people really do insist on dropping leads with heli setups then he going back to something like the old cv safety rigs would be better than no trace beads etc (if anyone remembers those)

No rig is perfectly safe
Wherever possible my preferred set up is an inline lead with 12" of tubing. If the main line parts then it's unlikely the lead and tubing won't be able slide off.

Do you see what I mean though Ian? You are often the most vocal regarding the heli and dropping leads debate but use clips for your fishing which would result in the exact outcome that you always say is unacceptable
.
I don't understand why fishing without a leader substantiates anything... Does naked line never catch on anything? Does it just slip through obstacles until they get rid of the hook? Of course it doesn't.
I appreciate that leaders are generally stronger and more abrasion resistant, but 15lb+ mono/fluro takes some breaking as we all know, and has as much potential to tether fish as anything else does, imo.

As I've just explained yes I'm vocal about it, and imo a leader makes a huge difference. If you drop the lead on a naked heli then no, it's no worse than a Leadclip or running set up. But as most use some form of leader, which are normally considerably stronger than mainline, and more prone to coiling, tangling etc, then the lead is needed. The real key is to fish strong enough and sensible enough to not lose kit in the first place, and to minimise risk as much as possible. If leads are "needed" to be dropped then I suggest that spot isn't suitable to fish in the first place. This fad for dropping leads hasn't been round long in the grand scheme of things, and we always did ok back before.....

"I use the Leadclip as I want the lead to drop if it becomes caught up, not just for the sake of it. Not something you can do with a heli."
You can fish a Heli with a breakaway C clip or weak link so if the lead does get rattled up it can come away same principle as only dropping them on a safety clip, no?
