If the swim is in any way snaggy, i.e if there are snags less than about 30 yards away, don't use the baitrunners

You may think its ok but by the time you are awake and out of the zipped bag and bivvy, they will be in the snags

During the day if you want them to run a bit, fine, but don't have the baitrunner loose, have it set (not tight) but just fairly firm.

I watched a vid on Utube today. Danny Fairbrass said when the carp goes into snags. The thing to do is don't panic. He said he's lost loads of carp trying to pull them out. He said the thing to do is let them come out in there own time.
So what he did was just put his rod back on the rod pod, and when the line started pulling off again. He just picked the rod up and started playing the fish again
He said it does take a bit of nerve to do it like that, but it works

That's the way yes mate, sometimes takes 20 minutes before they come out

It does happen occassionally but the thing to keep uppermost in your mind at all times when fishing is to not let carp get into snags, ever

More anglers need to think about how they are fishing at night - if you are sleeping with the sleeping bag and bivvy door zipped up you will need to be fishing a margin rod only (single rod) with loads of room for the carp to run, and on a firm baitrunner setting not a loose one - but preferably, actually, if you want a comfortable sleep out of the breeze and weather you should wind in all your baits - my philosophy is either sleeping or fishing, not both. I don't like sleeping with the door open so I choose one or the other - a restful sleep makes you fish better anyway, and for longer. The lake I fish is too small and snaggy to get inbetweeny and take liberties

My baitrunner reels are Shimano XT 600RB
I suppose it's best not to have the baitrunner on when I fish this style

No mate, if you are near snags don't use the baitrunner
Don't have the clutch jammed right up tight either, just have it fairly tight or you might damage their mouths - if you are pulling line of the clutch and it hurts your hand to do so, then it could also hurt the carps mouth -
Ask the bailiff on the bank if you are unsure mate.
Snag fishing is not everyone's cuppa tea, even some very experienced anglers don't like it. You have to be really confident about what you are doing.
Too much bad snag fishing goes on with anglers who are old enough to know better.

For snag fishing. Fish one rod, tight clutch, awake and on your rod(within hand reach). This is not something to do casually.

Precisely

Tight clutch important - but not locked up totally solid like some reccomend - there must be some give just as the rod is pulling at maximum strain
