But in that scenario mate the black is a silhouette, like zig fishing this works well. It stands out the best against the surface of the water.

On the bottom though, in often murky water, a different scenario entirely. If you watch any of these go pro videos of pike picking up dead baits, they seem to be really bad at doing it. A fish in the mid layers, the pike is like a typhoon, deadly accurate. On the bottom (dead baits), they need all the help they can get bless them from what I've seen. A bright bit of colour does not hurt.

Well when I walked in the shop and saw him, it had been a long time, and I do mean a long time since I'd last seen him but, recognised him straight away.
The coffee sounds nice but, I'm a tea man at heart, Iike a nice cup of coffee but, could drink tea for England!

Oh I'm a life long tea man to, I drink ten cups at least per day. But these are really posh coffees. I only got into coffee a few years ago, because of some woman. Gary makes the best coffee ever. Who else takes all this malarky with them fishing? That's his old feet. He has always done it, he made me a posh coffee on the banks of The Ocean in Kent, probably twenty years ago nearly now. Percolator, the finest columbian coffee beans pre ground. He even makes all the milk frothy first.

He's a coffee genius.

Sorry I wasn't clear enough, I meant when bringing the float in the last 10-15 yards or so when you know what's there, float tight to the lead, maybe only 6" boom off the bottom, I deliberately bring it in like that in winter to see if I can provoke a response close in 👍

Edit, look at that in the tube

Paulie, Can you or you friends recommend a good glove for Pike? Before anyone has a pop, I've never used a glove, and if it were up to me I never would but sometimes you don't have a choice.

Mate I have a glove!! Just for unhooking. All of these big Thames pike, had teeth that would **** you right up!! I needed a whole arm metal cover with one of them!

I got a metal glove from fleabay mate. Just do a search, they are by far the best. I think they are chefs gloves, to wear when chopping. But they get sold as pike gloves to. Brilliant they are. Mine was about £5.

All that matters is the trebles are dealt with safely and quickly for the pike IMO. If a glove helps, it helps! My mate gets all macho, does not use a glove... Every now and then, BOSH, have that macho man. His hands are all scarred.

Impressive in the tube isn't it. That's me in the reflection

That's the exact one I have. It does the job. I paid a fiver delivered so you might find it a bit cheaper.

Thanks for the link I'll get one ordered . I've read up on various forums inc PAC before asking, thing I want to avoid is snagging the glove on the rakers, something which seems to be a bit of a problem with some types of material v others.

Most things will snag their rakers mate. Just better not to touch them if possible. If you do, don't worry to much. When a pike strikes, their mouth is so wide open, the gill rakers are exposed anyway. I bet they get damaged all of the time when hitting a live prey. Imagine them smashing into a perch with those spiky fins. The gill rakers will heal well, it just looks bad, as they bleed a lot.

I took some one else's trace out of a 25lb pike two years ago. It had been cut with scissors, the trace itself. The angler done that, because he was scared to 'get in there'. I find, if you straddle them between knees, turn them on their back, and pull that jaw open from underneath, they can't do anything. The same fish done 27lb10oz not long after, and was caught twice more. It was seriously hungry.

My friends 32lb8oz, had teeth that were at least an inch long, the big ones. They were savage, and horrible looking. I'll be honest, I was jealous to have not caught it myself of course, but glad I did not need to put my hand inside that ones gob. It was incredible.

The Chew 40lbers have tiny little heads, and are young fish really that grow fast. That 32lber from the Thames, I'd have my money on that pike every single time against them Chew bigguns in a ruck. She'd take them on, five at a time, and smash them up.

Big old pike are thin on the ground nowadays around me, the last one I saw was around 8 years ago and that was a 24lb fish to a pal. The comerants love the smaller ones

Thank you, we caught loads mate. This is a good friend, he probably will not thank me for putting his photo on the internet again. He's caught so many premium big carp this young man, and no sod knows who he is, because he prefers it that way. Him and his brother are both exceptional anglers. He had never caught a big river pike. He had caught rakes and rakes of Thames 30lb+ carp by the time he was 21 (he came once with me when he was 16). Caught very big carp, from different, under the radar pits. More leney's than you could shake a stick at. We went for two hours after work, pike fishing, waited till dark. Waited till an hour after dark as no bites had been forthcoming. We were fishing heavy floats, heavyish running leads, rods laying on the deck. Floating braid under tension to the float, mega loose bait runners. Whatever way that float moves, you get a 'tick tick'. Standing there in the dark, with a torch on four rods laying on the floor. We could not see a thing. His rod ripped off, this was the result. He was very happy, so was I.

My mate had now caught a big pike. Took three hours. Best thing about all this pike fishing, I often always had/have a mate there with me. Social happy fishing. I've had good anglers tell me, I should have kept it all for myself. That would be crap though, how rubbish to sit on a freezing cold day on your own! I'd rather be having a laugh with a mate.

Brilliant

Anglers just going about their fishing under the radar, real passion

I have fished with pals for a long time, I do like to fish by myself at times though, get away from real life. My best fishing pal got divorced a couple of years ago now, screwed him up, sold his gear, although he has started to pick a few bits up. Happy days
