My pop-up rigs tend to be based on D-rigs.
Often standard coated braid, stripped or broken coating near the hook using an olivette to counterbalance the pop-up

But pop-ups still catch thousands of carp. Sometimes something more natural will catch but then you have things like chords that can be very tall, 4” of the lakebed and maybe more. I think IMO the reason why so many carp are caught on pop ups is because of their curiosity, they don't have hands so they use their mouth. In my words, ‘curiosity killed the carp!' Can be the same with predator fishing with lures for perch. If something comes into its territory it may attack it to either eat it, try to discourage it or not knowing what it is just biting it. Say also with bass in the US. If you use a lure to imitate a fish that is in their territory especially during spawning it will attack it to discourage it. But carp are now recognising that bright pop ups lead to them getting caught, so they may avoid them and that's when a bottom bait approach would maybe work better and catch more.

I think he meant why fish a poo up a few inches above the food when, while in silt carp usually bury themselves gills deep in the stuff to get to what's underneath, meaning your popup is more likely to hook them in the ass than the mouth

currently using a combi rig using Gemini booms and a looped on soft section with a normal hair and silicon trapping it opposite barb(not shop bought), used wafters and pop ups and nailed on both no fish lost yet... It could be described as the noodle as the kicker is half a length of shrink tube from packet angled slightly and a more exaggerated angle at the end. (see Scott lloyds rig). I use this with a running rig( fox camo angled run beads) which again I believe if you can get away with it is far superior to anything else. I had a bite yesterday , bobbin moved to top and just stayed there as if the fish didn't know what was going on. Happens alot with this set up. I have so much confidence in my setup right now. same setup also caught me 2 from PADS Yateley last year.

Maybe try the swim again with bottom baits once it's been fed on ,
Those pesky leaves may be gone 👍🏻
