Rule of thumb 1ft short per 3ft of depth, So in 30ft at short range I would be clipping the spod rod around 10ft shorter than the fishing rods.

There's more to it than Pythagoras theory. As the lead falls through the water the line also drags in the water causing it to fall back further.

As already mentioned - you could pop a marker float up and cast the spomb at that. As long as you know you're close you could then clip up the spod rod and check the difference

Its definitely not an exact science but the 1ft per 3ft has always worked ok for me.

Makes sense but 1ft for every 3ft sounds drastic, bet you're probably not far wrong though definitely when at range

Actually for any given depth, the greater the range the smaller the dropback. The time to be concerned is short range 10wraps)in deep(30 plus ft) water as in original post where it is 4 ft.
The 1ft for every 3ft is just wrong and grossly misleading. The real rule of thumb is ignore it completely except in very deep(30ft plus) water and even then its only any kind of problem at very short range. In the vast majority of fishing situations its irrelevant.
As I say, rule of thumb, ignore it.

The easiest way I've seen is via Dave Lane especially over shorter distances up to 20 wraps.
Cast out marker float.
Load spomb then wrap once with insulating tape so if can't open.
Cast beyond marker float, then wind in to exactly in line with float, you need a floating spomb obviously!
Clip up with rod at 45 degree angle.
Minor adjustment if necessary.
Record number of wraps to that distance on spomb rod and fishing rod .

This method is spot on every time and once recorded there for ever.

Thats simple and would certainly work. Now how accurate is your casting?
At 20 wraps I would be happy to be within 2/3 ft of the marker float with my spod, so bed of bait with a four to six foot spread not allowing for scatter and undertow, and then baits cast out with similar accuracy onto the bait several feet apart. Why worry about a dropback of less than 6 ins in 6ft to 12ft of water at 20 wraps.
Talk of pinpoint accuracy is self delusion. No more from me on this, getting old and daft.

Then you have to think abut the undertow and what's in your spomb ie bait or small bits for where you land your spomb.

I just imagine my spot and do a box around it of 1/2 wrap with bait . Will do larger if its very windy or right on the spot it its flat calm and has been for a few hours to let the undertow die of.

Just some extra things to make you think of.
