My club is increasingly having problems with cut offs due to Zebra mussels. Particularly when fishing on or near gravel bars. My idea is to adapt the sea fishing pulley rig. However I don't know if it's possible to make it safe for carp fishing, whilst making it able to be cast a long way. I think there is mileage in this if it can be made to work effectively, and above all safely.

Why don't you use a decent snag leader in combination with a safe helicopter system?

Leaders not allowed. Bloody stupid rules designed to stop people catching carp.

Won't help. Pulley rig is for keeping a lead away from rocks, the way we fish for carp I.e horizontal rods and lines that make contact with the bottom it will still get damaged.

A pulley rig is 99% of the time going to go where tge pulley bead runs the mono but as you won't be using a leader I wouldnt get my house on it.

Best course of action is to up tge strength of everything. Minimum .4 line and fluoro if you can as more abrasion resistant.

I see what you're saying. Club rules state max line dia 0.37 or 15lb. Stupid rule needs changing.

That's a nonsensical rule.

You can certainly use (I certainly wouldn't) a standard pulley rig for carp using a lead like the Gemini ARC leads but unless you can use at least a snag or rubbing leader between the lead and hooklength you are not gaining anything in the way of abrasion resistance, or you could use a very long hook length or it won't really act as designed. You could use a 1.5-3ft 30lb fluoro d rig.
If the mainline above the swivel breaks the fish will be left towing the whole rig and the lead. Not good.

You're right I think it's not such a feasible idea as I first thought. Can you still get those floats Frank Warwick was promoting some years ago?

If everyone is scratching their heads figuring out how to land fish over the gravel bars could the margins be neglected? If you can get some bait in regularly you also have the benefit of seeing if it gets eaten. Not easy on all lakes I know.

Yes the margins can produce if the banks are quiet, if I'm in the right swim I will put one down the side.

Why not use some rig tubing over your main line?

So many waters now ban leaders it's just my default setup.
Are you sure?

This action cannot be undone.
