Albright slipping (19 posts / 4,063 views)

I'm messing about with a Fluoro/braid multi rig and after several attempts, the Albright has slipped most times and the braid section has snapped a couple of times!

Confidence is lost in the knot, but I'd still like to be able to tie it properly, or is this a common fault?

Components:

25lb tint link Fluoro
20lb jackal with an unstripped figure of 8 loop one end and about 4" stripped to tie onto the Fluoro.

I'm wrapping the jackal (single line not doubled over) 13 times up the Fluoro and it looks good until I give it a proper pull then it slips about an inch so the braid section is far too long.

The times that it's snapped, it looks like the knot has slipped off the Fluoro and onto the braid.

So any thoughts as to why this is happening and is there another knot worth trying to connect Fluoro and braid?

Cheers

Once bedded down properly the albright shouldn't slip, are you going back through the loop the same way you started?

with a single braid i would try 8 up and 4 back down over the top

Maybe try the Korda Slip D braid, or 30lb Armakord. I'm a novice with the Albright, only been using it about 9 months doubled over Combi-Multi style, but never had it slip once using those braids, and that's only 4 turns up then back through the same way.

Shoudn't slip - I use supernatural which isn't course and never slips.
After you done the 13 wraps up do you do a couple back down?

I had issues too with the Albright slipping. I was using Loop Braid and IQ2. I switched to Korda Boom 25lb and Arma Kord 30lb and it was no longer an issue.

Thanks, that's a really good example and very close to what I'm trying to do, but I don't want the loop to be braid or to use tubing or 'kickers'

I'm trying to have the loop as coated braid but connect to the fluoro with the braid stripped, so it's single braid not double.

I'll whip more up and down tomorrow and give the mahin a try too👍

Are you talking braid hook end and fluoro hook length?
If so try it the other way round, works far better as rig. Oz holness did a great walk through it on a TA video, think it was an autumn vlog.

This is what I'm trying to do, will look to see if Oz has covered it, thanks

Coated braid loop holding the hook
Stripped braid hinge needs to be between 5-10mm
Fluoro boom

I mean Oz does it the opposite way round to the way you are tying it. Stuff hook end and coated braid boom. I've used it for years. Like a more simple hinge rig.

I do 7 up and 3 down on the chod hooklink and never had one slip out or break. Tbh it sounds like the components as opposed to the knot itself. Could always try blobbing the tag ends if you don't already. That'll stop the slipping through issue.

Ive found some fluro the braid does bite into it nice, korda boom works well or i just make a combi on a coated braid.

I've used lots of albrights and almost never had a problem.

When I tied combi rigs I used 19 lb soft plus Fluoro and supernatural braid.

I tied the Albright with 8 turns up and 5 turns back. Then I put a tiny (pin head size) drop of superglue on the knot.

If you are careful and start the knot with the Fluoro touching the hook then you can finish with less than an inch of exposed braid.

Another way to help secure the knot is to tie a ‘Rizutto finish' with the tag end. Basically a whip finish - just google it.

As has been mentioned some braids are more ‘slippery' than others - see the Peck video on his combi-rig. He ties it with a loop of braid.

Of course you can avoid the ‘knot' by using a loop of braid; and then a loop on the end of the Fluoro - but that is cheating !

When your whipping the braid up the mono loop, then back down a few times towards the braided section, it's not an albright or an albright special knot. It sounds like half an Alberto knot.
Have a crack at doing a full Alberto knot instead, it's stronger than an albright but a fraction larger in size but that shouldn't be much of a problem if it's not for a leader.

I'd not heard of the Alberto knot, but this is basically what people are using as an albright.

Here is a clear video of how to make the knot.

How about calling it an improved Albright ?

That is what it is called in the sal****er fly fishing ( in salty water) world - where I come from. Apologies for the strange edit.

The same naming issue applies to the non slip mono loop aka Kreh loop (and one or two other names too). Regardless of the various names it is a very good knot ! And just for fun; there is now an ‘improved/better' version of that one too !

If you fancy trying out a great knot for joining two lines together google ‘cobranagle'....It is a super complicated (better) version of a huffnagle. I've never even tried to learn how to tie it, despite having it demonstrated to me by it's inventor.

The whipping goes in the wrong direction to the albright, so it's a fair bit different. The albright is great for when the leader knot is on the spool due to the width, but I'm sure it's not quite as strong when tested on braid to mono compared with the Alberto.

I've never heard of the cobrangle knot so I watched an animated video. Your right, there's a lot going on there!
The FG knot is a real slimline and very strong, but not the nicest when it's blowing a gale and pouring down.

My experience of leader knots is from the beach, one thing I've never tried is fly fishing.

I found that the softer and thinner fluoros slip more. Get the right combination and it will never slip
