Same situation for me on my new syndicate, hoping to use the stiff hinge, haven't used a chod for years, dropped far too many.

If you can fish low lying weed I'd opt for the hinge. Always had great results as I'm not a fan of light leads

Long running chod for me.. 5-6 ft of leadcore ..

Bottom bead sits on a stop or knot 12 inch's from lead .

Top stop all the way up to 5ft .. my waters ate like football pitches and I catch safely and successfully like this .

Always moisten your top stop ...

The Chod I use is set up on 4ft lead core but I use tubing 6 inches of it up from the lead and use the lightest lead possible never lose fish on it big hook 3inch hook link the key is that tubing keeping the lead away from the hook during the fight

I absolutely hate helicopter, bomb on the end of the line set-ups in weed, inlines are far better option.

And in weed NEVER use leadcore. If you get a breakage the fish is left towing it around, and that can snag and tether in the weed. I have had to retrieve fish tethered like that, going out into the lake to unsnag the fish. I also know of a number of Fisheries that have lost fish tethered on leadcore and eventually found dead. Other fishery owners have had to euthanise fish that had broken their jaw, still hooked after being caught up on that sh..

Inline distance lead, or drop-off inline, with a multi rig, or even a simple knotless knotted braid rig will catch.
Put the whole lot in a PVA bag, lead, hook and bait. Hook in the bottom corner nicked in, plenty of chopped freebies, pellets and boilies around the short hooklink, and the top of the bag lick and stick over the lead.

I took the trouble to experiment in the water with leadcore, and fishery owners have had to ban it because of the risks it caused, so I would say more than just opinion.

In fact I would say, in weedy or snaggy waters, don't use any leader at all.

Nick over many years of bailiffing I've had to rescue/recover numerous tethered fish from snags and weed and the vast majority of them were attached to leadcore rigs. Many seemingly set up safely. So not just your opinion.

I'll that on board but personally I've never had a problem as I fish braid.

Fish can tethered on all manner of lines and braids etc ....

If it bothers you that much you wouldn't fish at all .

That's why I gave up eel fishing .. they are delicate and in decline .

It bothered me so much I knocked it on the head .

I don't go around to people saying NEVER fish for eels.

My opinions my opinion and yours is yours .

@Westmidsmoaner,
Please don't try to use the 'if you cared that much' card, it is not a valid argument. I think it is more than just opinion.

I have stated I won't use ANY leader near weed or snags, because I have had to retrieve snagged fish from it, I try to reduce the risks. I will avoid swims where I think fishing would cause problems if I hook a fish. I have access to a boat to get out if a fish does make it to a weedbed or snag, (and I wear a lifejacket for my own protection).

I also pointed out fishery owners have retrieved fish both dead and alive tethered on leadcore, Essexandy has backed me up on that, and I also know Moorsey had to kill a fish he retrieved where leadcore had wrapped around weed and had broken the carps jaw where it was dragging behind.
Suffolk Water Park lost a big fish to a leadcore rig, Grey Tail had reached 40lbs but was found tethered and dead. There are more incidents, and have been reported by the angling press, Angling Times, Anglers Mail and CarpTalk/ CarpWorld. Simon Crow at least has had articles written about it, Keith Moors has made his argument against it in print.

I experimented after I lost a fish, that I left trailing leadcore, and found that it wasn't safe. I got into the water in winter to experiment, and had to untangle a fish wrapped in the stuff around the only snags in the lake, chest deep to someone else's rig.
Even last year I retrieved a leadcore set-up on my syndicate that was a shocker, a snap-off, that thank goodness, the bait had fallen off, but caught up in the weed. I was in chesties raking a swim when I got pulled off balance. I had to work my way along the leadcore untangling as I went.

I use 50lb braid for pike fishing. I hook a pike I need to land it, if you break off with pike tackle and leave a baited trace, that is a guaranteed dead fish, it does not mean I can fish into snags. Braid is so different to mono mainline. If when carp fishing the mainline breaks, carp can eject the hook if there is no added or inherent weight, that means any leadcore or fixed or still attached lead.

I mentioned on another thread, and I think it was Scozza who actually made the query, about how my inline lead is attached to the hooklink swivel join, I use rubber tulip beads, which will pull off the swivel, and the lead is then free to slide over the broken mainline.
I have no problem in casting a PVA bag into weed, however if I think it is too thick, from leading around or feeling around with a marker float (if the marker float doesn't rise up its too thick to fish) I try to find an area with less weed. In these less weedy areas, a pop-up rig with the lead, and a bag of bits has caught me plenty of fish.

In that case then end the production of leadcore full stop .

And perhaps you should be firing off a few emails to some of carp anglings most influential instead of patronising me on here ??

Why can't I use the ‘if you cared that much' argument??

I stopped eel fishing because I could not guarantee not to deep hook fish . Therefore it was unsafe and detrimental to the eels . I stopped eel angling for good . Therefore there is weight to my argument.

Doesn't it fit your narrative ?

You fish your way and I'll fish mine .. safely .

Some waters specify the use of a leader as they don't want mono or braid lifting scales or cutting in to fish .

In your opinion these fishery owners are all wrong are they and your right ??

Perhaps fire them off a report of your research so they can see the error of their ways .

I don't use leadcore personally I think it's horrible stuff. The same as fake baits like corn. Any crack off it's always fishing.

I do use leaders in snags or weed just because I've had mainline heavily damaged before when fishing naked. But it use a 3ft length of fluoro. No trace bead or loose bead on a sinker. Had a fish snag me up before and watched it bolt off when it dumped the bead so I no it works.

you just have to take your time to judge the situation your in. And make sure there's always a way to free a weeded fish ( boat or waders ) or in the case of a cut off it's a safe as possible.

**** sake! Is no one allowed to have a differing opinion anymore without it turning into an argument and everyone getting all sensitive?

Personally, i dont see how a limp material like leadcore, is more likely to get snagged than a springy material like mono, but some people disagree, they are entitled to their opinion and i respect that. Doesnt make either of us right or wrong, but why get in a hissy other it. Grow up

Totally agree with this.

To recommend never using leaders near weed or snags seems mental to me. I'd rather protect them by not getting cut off in the first place than try to mitigate when it's already happened. Each to their own though.

I think the key using any leader is to use the Strongest line you can to get the distance you need. Hopefully to eliminate leaving tackle in fish. Nothing is 100% safe.

Which post do you want me to answer first?
I haven't patronised you, I have attempted to explain my opinion, and reasons why. Your replies are patronising!

I have emailed magazines that printed leadcore articles, an article in particular that when I tested the setup showed itself to be a potential death rig. I contacted the editor at the time and showed my experiments, although he agreed privately in returned emails, he would not retract the article. He did however arrange a 'for and against' article debate. The article against leadcore was more constructive than the 'for' article! It also gave proof rather than a dig against 'armchair anglers who don't fish'. I do spend one heck of a lot of time fishing.

You can't use the 'if you cared that much' argument, reason being fishing is not something I do for Leisure, it is a way of life, it is in the blood. I return the fish I catch, however I know that putting a hook in their mouth is going to cause a small injury. I would much rather not kill anything I hook in freshwater. Sea fishing, if it is sizeable I would take home the occasional fish for the pot.

Is eel fishing relevant?
You can sort your hooking arrangement, you do not have to hook them deeply, you have an indication problem, which can be sorted by your lead arrangement, bigger or smaller hook, more sensitive indication.

Let's go through this. When you floater fish, do you use a leader? I can totally understand having a leader with braid, as braid can cut into fish, (actually as can leadcore), however on those weedy waters braid is a liability, because you need a leader to protect the fish, although tubing will prevent it cutting.

Personally, i dont see how a limp material like leadcore, is more likely to get snagged than a springy material like mono, but some people disagree,

Leadcore is not limp, it does not fall into every trough or dip. It is actually quite stiff compared to mono. If we consider the 'safest' set up with leadcore is a helicopter rig, you need the line tight to get instant indication. So a tight line at anything under 40metres or do is going to be lifted off the lakebed. At more than that range the line is going to be running over the lakebed anyway.

The stiffness of leadcore, and its lack of 'slipperyness' compared to mono is enough to cause it to snag and bite into weed and snags. Mono can slide over, leadcore may not.

To any normal person we are all mental.

Such attentiveness to the welfare of something we drag out of its environment purely for the satisfaction of doing so.

Sometimes I do chuckle

I've often wondered what the advantage was of a hinged stiff rig over a chod, bearing in mind a chod will almost always be presented and a stiff hinge could rest over debris in an unnatural position.

Both have a similar hooking arrangement, ie a stiff section popped up off the lake bed.

I get that you have more vertical movement with a STH, but other than that does anyone have any observations?

Stiff hinge is potentially quicker for the weight of the lead to do it's job. Depending on the way the fish moves with a chod, and the distance between the beads, the weight of the lead may not come into play till the fish has moved a few feet. Chods are great for presenting well, but not for hooking mechanics (in my opinion). I'd rather fish a hinge if I can get away with it. Chod is a last resort for me.

For me the benefit of a chod is fish it sliding, so it can naturally settle depending on the depth of the weed, especially if chucking at shows where the weed can be a bit of an unknown.

Even so, fished with a slack line depending on the direction the fish moves it can still potentially move a fair way before direct contact with the lead.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great set up where the situation dictates, but I'm more confident behind hinges personally.

Chods also rely on you fishing slack. Like you said snag situations there almost useless. If fishing tight to snags I try to fish a leadclip as you can tighten down to the lead without affecting the rig ( the lead is before the rig ) On a heli set-up if it's under 40 yards say your could lift the mainline / leader and potentially make your rig sit un-natural as the lead is after the rig.

Seen people lose alot more on chods then I have on a hinge not sure why.
