Best rig for PVA bag (45 posts / 5,181 views)

Only tried using PVA bags a few times with a pop up on a Ronnie rig with no success. I think the PVA bag might hinder the mechanics and presentation of the Ronnie rig. Anyone had any success using this method?

What rig works best in PVA bags?

Something with a bottom bait imo. Why would you want the contents of the bag on the deck, and your hookbait floating around a couple of inches above it? A bottom bait will sit nicely in the pile of food from the bag . Simple, short knotless knot rig will be fine . No need to get fancy with rigs

What type of line works best for the hair? Do you think 11mm pellets are too big for PVA bags

The hair is made from the tag end of the knotless knot . You can put whatever you want in the bag, as long as any liquid is pva friendly. Just make sure that if you do use large pellets etc then use some powder to fill any gaps to remove air from the bag or it will float

Yes as Ian said a bottom bait or small wafter, if you really want to use a pop up then it ideally wants to be very low, so a multirig or a kd rig with a shot between the hook and the bait

I've always used 10mm hi vis pop ups with a small shot under to create a wafter with a size 6-8 hook on a knotless knot or blowback using esp sink link. Had a bunch of fish with that setup

So the knotless knot is made from the hooklink? What do you use for that. At the moment I only have esp synchro XT and stiff boom.

A short length of supple braid is what most people use. The bag is usually filled with small items such as pellets or boilie crumb. Small. Hookbait so it doesn't look massive compared to the rest of the bag contents.

Do a quick YouTube search on “carp pva bag”. Quite a few different videos showing all the components used including the braid for the hook length. Everything from Nash, Korda ESP and more.

Yes it is. A coated braid will be the thing to buy as you can use it for all-sorts of rigs. Thinking anglers tungskin is the best on the market imo

What type of rig is he using in that video. Just a simple knotless knot rig with a short coated braid hooklink?

Interesting that he uses fake corn pop up. Not sure about that

If fake corn is banned and you really want to use it then tails up have brought out a new product called "Cornz" . might be what you want see their website or u tube for details.

Would you guys recommend an inline lead like Kev Hewitt uses. Or is that not needed when there's no weed?

yes inline lead every time much easier to load the bag and much neater, plus an inline works very well with a short supple hooklink

You can set up an inline to work semi fixed so once the fish shakes his head it becomes a running rig, you can also set up to work drop off style.

I use an inline based on a 1 and 3/4 oz NGT lead with a 65mm stem. I form a loop inside on either end to connect to the QC swivel and then its loop to loop at the top 👍

I've been tweaking it a while. Shown here but I can't link so you will need to copy this into your browser (perfectly safe)

They look nice and tidy. Can you work out what rig Kev Hewitt is using in that video or article. He doesn't actually talk about how he ties the corn on to the rig. He only talks about the lead setup.

I think it's just a simple knotless knot rig but I'm really not sure as I've only tied Ronnies before. Who better to ask than a RigDemon

I only use a knotless knot on a 5" piece of soft hooklink, with a small shot underneath a wafter just to pin it down.

Not let me down yet 👍

Where do you get your mixed pellets from? Doesn't look like aller aqua does any.

Haven't fished bags for a while but when I did I'd use mainline pva pellet mix, bit pricey but I had good results with it

Best advice I could give you is use a combination of crushed boilie, some pellet, 1 or 2 boilies and some liquid additive injected in to your bag, anything that is good quality should work but IMO the liquid is a big edge.

Most liquids these days are PVA friendly, so just check before you buy.

I only use two manufacturers, CC Moore and A.S Baits and both do PVA friendly liquids.

Probably explained a bit easier. 45lb lead core with the inner removed. It starts at just under 6 inches and the final length is 4.5/5" inches. The loops are spliced in as usual but the ends are blobbed with a lighter so they dont pop back through opening up the loop.

This then fits perfectly into the in line and 65mm stem with just the loop popping out of the top - see below

Everything pulls through the stem if there's a problem and the swivel at the base is only partially fixed.

Yes you can buy the ready made stems, but I've never liked them with the metal loop inside, typically a cheap mastic type stem which falls apart and there's never any QC swivels on them. Much prefer to make my own.

Do you not like using premade leadfree leadcore like Gardner camflex? I've never used an inline lead before only a running rig and heli lead. I thought the idea of inline lead was that they can run up and down the line?
Is the inline lead fixed in this rig?

I tend to use what I've got confidence in and that is 45lb ESP lead core with the inner removed for this particular rig, I'm not saying other products are not suitable, it's just what works for me.

The lead isn't fixed, I often find the stem off and lead has risen up the line on the retrieve when there's a fish on the end and its had a bit of a shake about.

For the supple braid knotless knot is 25lb enough

25lb is more than enough for most carp scenarios. I was snapped on 35lb hooklink a couple of months ago using this same inline setup by a big catfish, which chewed through it 🤣

I know there is tons of hooklink material out there but I do swear by this stuff for most solid bag situations. £6 for 20m in either 25 or 35lb, its spot on 👍

Post edit : it pi$$es me off actually that most well known hooklink brands now only give you 10m of hooklink material for the £10-15 that only a few years ago used to get you 20m.

Im looking at getting some pellets in bulk for PVA bags. Its between a 25kg micro mixed pellet mix or skrettings 2mm pellet both for £34. Which do you think I should go for?

25kg is a f*ck load of micro pellet for bag fishing. Why not buy a kilo of each and see which you prefer?

It sounds to me like you're going 0-60 in a second flat here. Forget how I'm putting my bags together, to be honest if your not even used to bag fishing then splicing leaders will probably be alien to you. Just buy yourself some cheap bag stems, crush up a bit of bait your used to using with a few bags and get the basics right first.

Personally, I would refine and refine something I'm doing until it works, hell I'm still tweaking the presentation of my bags many years after I started using them.

With all due respect. It doesn't sound like you have a great deal of experience, so I'm assuming it's not a very difficult water you are fishing?
A small method feeder may be a better start, you basically get the same end result and can just use a short mono hook link with some scalded pellet and a bit of groundbait round the feeder.
No loops, leaders or messing about with pva

Only been carp fishing for 6 months. It is quite a hard water in my eyes. Lots of bream, crayfish, ducks that eat your boilies, otters and very low stock of very wary old carp. Someone has not caught anything there in 8 months. I only caught one carp their in 6 short sessions.

I am always open to new tactics but I'm not sure if a method feeder would work in this water

Method feeder is a great way to fish. Method mix is cheap and tweakable, puts loads of available attraction in the area, keeps you busy, encourages you to cast about a bit. Best bit is not having to mess about tying pva bags!

What water are you fishing?

Lots of bream = forget buying 25kg of pellets!
Method feeders are massively underrated, but you'll be hauling bream with pellet and groundbait however it's applied

The lake is Barton court. What should I use as prebait when there's lots of bream?

What tactic would an experienced angler use in these conditions?

Having googled that lake it looks like a pleasure fishing pond.
Rules say barbless hooks and no braid, not even for rigs; so you can forget braid in a pva bag.
It also says no keepnets, but there's photos of dead looking tench and bream laid out on the grass or held up in weigh slings though.
This is why advice should always be taken with a pinch of salt, this is mixed pleasure fishing and the reason people fail on places like this is because only a small % of the carp will respond to and be efficiently hooked on the rigs, baits and methods people use for bigger fish.
I'm not sure you will avoid the bream without maybe using nuts, but I wouldn't advise that. I imagine there's already plenty of old crap bait rotting in that lake already. You certainly don't need to prebait, as in bait up days in advance of fishing.
Personally I'd want to be moving around, quietly, with a single rod. The carp will be where the people aren't.. if it was too busy for that I'd probably go home if I'm honest

What a horrible website, had to have a Google after noj said pics looked like the fish are dead. Well I'm sure they are, my advice find somewhere else and pester the locals there.
