Had my first go at fishing with pva sticks today. Didn't go to plan.
I was only fishing for small carp upto 10lb. Mono reel line down to a lead clip. 1 oz bomb, quick change swivel and a 9lb mono hooklength of 6" with an anitangle sleeve to cover the quick change swivel.
Tried hooking the stick direct and pulling the hooklength through it but lost count of the number of times I reeled in and the hook was around the lead clip and wasn't fishing.
Tried feathering the cast which didn't help.
Do I need a stiffer hooklength to fish a stick or is there another reason for my problems.
Thanks

Are you sure you aren't getting done by fish?

Must admit that was my thought. Maybe a heavier(3oz) lead and shorter hook link. If they are pressured, switched on fish they can easily eject or shake out a hook with no indication. Mind you I think there will be lots of other ideas.

I would try the hooklengh through the stick and the hook into the stick at the bottom or pva nugget on the hook

What size hook and bait are you using? The rig may be unbalanced.

Hook was a size 10 Kamasan B175 Trout Hook. Bait was a Korum Pink slow sinking piece of fake corn. I later swapped this to a 12mm Sticky Baits dumbell to add some more weight to the hook end.
Pretty sure it wasn't fish doing it. Something was wrong with the set up. Only fishing about 40mtrs out so not a long cast hence the 1oz lead.

It could be the rig is unbalanced with such a light lead in conjunction with the pva stick.
I would first try feathering the cast to see if that helps to keep everything straight.
If that doesn't work i would try using a heavier lead.

You might find that the PVA stick is heavier or as heavy as the lead, and on the cast the lead and stick are cartwheeling in mid air.
If it is not that, use a stiffer hooklink so that it is pushed away from the lead, and if you have a softer section or hinge near the hooklink, put that and the hook out of reach of the lead clip.

How do you know its not fish doing it? Tbh I use sticks all the time, threading then onto the hooklink and never get tangles despite what size lead or stick I use. Imo the unbalanced rig talk is cobblers

I use a stick to prevent tangles can honestly say I have never had a tangle using them from the size of a Single crumbed boilie up to 4” long
Have to say if you are threading the hook length through the stick and pressing the hook into the end of the stick on a basic in line or lead clip set up it must either be the fish or you are dropping it all in in a heap. I can't think of anything else that can be a problem. I have fished them regularly for years and they have made my rigs utterly reliable and very forgiving. Don't lose the sticks, tweak your rig and hook some fish.

Good call. Never encountered them so never consider them.

Could be on the retrieve? If the action is a bit jerky, happened to me a few to es.

As Gordon and someone else mentioned about crayfish.
Also, try a heavier lead and get a drop you can feel.

Yeah this, even Barbel fishing I put a stick on every rig I cast out for the specific reasons that I know 100% it's not tangled, the hook hasn't been turned over and it's fishing. Slide it down the hooklink, onto the hook and just nick the point into the side mesh or leave it just proud.
