I've been playing around with pop up rigs for a long time and tank testing them.
I have to say the mechanics on a 360 and spinner (ronnie rig) seem to be the best. Although the withy pool rig is a very good one too.
Obviously it depends on the individual carps mouths too but I really can't see a more effective rig for getting more picks ups converted to takes...
Thoughts?

Maybe, maybe not. The question should be does it result in more landed fish rather than takes. As although I haven't used spinners much when I have played about I've dropped more than I've landed. The withy rig I used many years ago and it wasn't bad but nothing special. The multi rig however is my go to pop up rig and I've had a lot on it and haven't lost one for a few seasons now on it. For me tank testing isn't overly relevant as you can't replicate a fish feeding, and like you say they all feed differently anyway

Struggle to beat a classic stiff hinge rig IMO.

Agreed, also probably the most versatile with different material and height options.

Totally agree, still much prefer the HS rig

I cannot get on with the spinner rig tried it a couple of times and lost more than landed!! Whereas stiff hinge rig lands far more than lost presents well and something the fish have difficulty in getting rid of it once hooked.

I never lost any fish with the Ronnie, you just need too many bits and bobs to tie it.

Never lost a fish on spinner rig.
But I've found get bit more mouth damage on hard fighting fish/long battles.

Very selfish to carry on using it then isn't it?

I don't think we can say there is such a thing as an ultimate pop up rig. There are better/worse pop up rigs for different applications/spots etc.
For a very low lying pop up on cleaner substrates the ronnie/spinner is hard to beat imo.
The hinge is a fantastic rig but I'd not fish that on a cleaner deck nowadays. I'd prefer the ronnie/spinner.
When it starts getting dirty the hinge is the one for me.

In a carp world where the theme seems to be "do something different" and "think outside the box", throwing out something that 95% of other people are and takes minimal interlect to tie has just never appealed.

I definitely agree different is generally good, and I agree the rig takes minimal intellect to tie (although I'm not sure what relevance that has to anything). But I still think, in answer to the OP's question, that in the right situation the rig is hard to beat in terms of mechanics i.e. picks-ups/takes ratio.
What rig would you suggest is better?

Its a generalisation because its so simple to tie everyone uses it and therefore it catches loads of fish - that has to be a factor in why this is being labelled as the ultimate rig. If it was a pig to tie and had the same credentials as you say it does, this thread wouldn't exist because half the people who caught on the Ronnie/Spinner would have caught the same thing on something else or even not caught at all because they don't have it in their armoury to tie a decent HSR / Withey Pool. Might be a bit lively that, but you get my point.
A decent HSR / Withey Pool in my opinion is better than a Ronnie - so not the ultimate rig.

Well there you go lol. Nothing to do with being an effective rig. It's just easy to tie
I personally don't think the withy or the hinge are thinking outside the box. Both fantastic rigs though

hahaha - It is though!
I don't doubt its a good fish catcher, the convenience has amplified its reputation I suppose is my angle.
I'll PM you when I invent the ultimate pop up rig.... and there wont be a quick swivel thing in sight

First saw this rig 7 or 8 years ago when the hook was tied to the swivel with braid.
I then watched a guy called John Barnes have fantastic results on it at Walthamstow, I know he wouldn't use It if it caused mouth damage and bumped fish.

Surely far less likely to cause mouth damage if the hook is tied to the swivel with braid?

What are the best quick change swivels that you guys are using?
Thanks.
