Hello all, my syndicate is extremely weedy and has limited overhead casting room, now obviously the thing to do would be to test it in the margins but given our current situation I cant, do you still get the same presentation if you drop a helicopter setup from a bait boat rather than casting ?

Cheers

If you balance the hook bait and feel for a drop the. I can't see why it wouldn't

I think so. I have done it both ways i.e. letting it drop on a slack line/letting it take line, so it drops near vertically, good for holes in weed etc or letting it drop on a tight line with the rod tip up to feel the lead down like when you cast, both have worked for me

helis are not the right rig to drop (or underarm cast for that matter)
and you can't hit a clip with them either!

They are for open water fishing, and only like a gentle, normal overhead cast or they will tangle

If dropping from a boat you want an inline backed by tubinng with any type of hooklink, or a leadclip with a short stiff hooklink and anti tangle sleeve

What a load of nonsense. I've used them for years, under armed, fishing to clips, dropped from a real boat, in basically every situation imaginable.... caught hundreds, never suffered with tangles.

You said in another thread you use them for 99% of your fishing... naked with long braid links (there's a recipe for a tangle). Or do you only ever fish in open water where you can caress a cast and not clip up?

I use heli pretty much for everything. Close medium and long. All perfect
And 2 or 3 times a year in France with a bait boat. Never tangles perfect presentation .
And also tight to snags with a Gardener C Clip to lose lead if needed.

And how can you not hit the clip, if you are casting within the range that up your are capable of?

Matey was right, heli rigs are only suitable for overhead casting

If you underarm cast a heli rig or do anything other than normal overhead cast it, they tangle
It sounds silly but its true, it doesn't need explaining mate

Feel the lead down as with any cast, no tangles. Been doing it for 50 years and no problems, so must be doing something right. Will carry on regardless in the absence of an explanation

WOW aren't you a superstar!

(I will pass, though, on your - let me guess - short stiff rigs)

Of COURSE they won't tangle

But they won't catch you much either

Oh dear looks likie the thread has been hijacked by schoolchildren who are up way past their bedtime

Let me give you a little clue:

There is more than one person out there who actually goes fishing occassionally and experiences things

But good luck with having the internet as your only source of life and information

I've only got one stiff rig and I wouldn't call it short.

Makes me laugh this forum - people ask questions then they get answered sensibly, but the people with the sensible answers get shouted down

You won't tangle a short stiff rig (unless you are you lot - you would somehow manage it) - but you won't catch anything on it either
(Thankfully you people leave plenty of carp for people like me who do things their way using decades of experience and thinking outside the box)
