What is the reason to ban leaders of any kind especially leadcore etc I would have said they where safe if the knot or splice was done right

Quite often some using them haven't tied the knot/splice right, or given any thought to the what if's and situations they face, just easier all round to ban.

One of the problems leading to bans has been misuse of lead core. Incorrect attachment to the mainline using knots, clips etc, long lengths, 12ft/20ft and more, 3ft should be max, poor construction and incorrect splicing leading to tethered fish. Lead core does not pull through or round obstacles easily and retains kinks. It is also very strong and is definitely more potentially dangerous to fish than other materials. The easy way for fisheries to manage problems like this is a ban. Lots of heavy, fast sinking alternatives these days. If used properly leaders are safe, the problem is anglers misusing them in most cases.

in simple terms - you cant legislate for idiots - so the safest option all round is no leaders at all.

One of my waters is very weedy and has a no leader policy.
I'm thinking of trying some of the tapered mainline, seems like a really good compromise to me.

True to a certain extent, but you'd think on waters like Linear (all of them inc. syndi) where anything goes it would be carnage, but it isn't

Any suggestions for decent tapered main lines?

Not really, not used any yet. Will do a bit of research and see what I can find though :-)

Fox and Korda are ones I've tried. Both fine but I prefer the Korda, it is subline and so sinks well and knots well. They both have tapers on both ends so if you lose the leader section you can reverse the line. Both around 300 yds. Have had no problems with either.

Nice idea about tapered at both ends. Thanks.

What would be the best/safest knott to fix a leader to the mainline? Have leaders in my arsenal but haven't used them as haven't found the need to.... Yet.

So loop to loop together? Is it then pulled completely tight? Or you want to keep both loops formed is that makes sense

Depends what sort of leader you're talking about. Are you referring to a leadcore leader?

No. No lead core. Just a safezone leader korda dark matter.

I'm a blood knott or palomar knott user but I'll try this - plenty of time to practice knott tying

Just wasn't sure as you usually fix to something metal and secure. Thank you

Gibbalicious are you on about connecting a swivel to connect the leadcore to the mono or have I got the wrong end of the stick?.

No mate, can't have any resistance incase of a snap off between the mainline and leader otherwise it's a badly snagged/tethered fish

No, no, no mate can't be any misunderstanding here. A suitable knot or splice only, no swivels, clips metalwork or plastic EVER.
No knots in lead core, splices only
Max length lead core 1metre
Do not use lead core as a shock leader.
Buy fit for purpose shockleaders or shockleader material and use a suitable knot. My choice back to back grinners, easy to tie, reliable and neat.
Fused leaders and spliced lead core leaders tie a long (4ins plus) figure of eight in the end of the mainline and fix loop to loop to leader. There are alternative knots but this is pretty safe stuff

What is wrong with you? He's already said he isn't talking about attaching the leader with a swivel, and has correctly understood and explained why. Are you just going from thread to thread to try and cause an argument? You need to sort it out, you're coming across like an aggressive little hitler.

Hello phil090781, nice to hear from you again. I'm sorry I had the temerity to disagree with you on another thread but that's life. No hitlerite tendencies but I felt that a fellow angler was potentially misunderstanding a very important fish safety point that causes many tethered fish deaths. Was I bit heavy handed, don't know, if so sorry to the chap. but hopefully no dead carp.

In most peoples eyes as you attach your rig with a swivel or QC swivel.
if you didn't know any better you may use a swivel or a clip - that being said its hard to find suitable advice online and when buying these leaders it doesn't state on them best method for attaching etc when really it should. I wasn't sure at all how to fix it therefore I didn't feel comfortable using it. Now I know it gives me the added option. And unless your active on these forums or quite social with other fishermen you'd have no idea of the dangers of lead core as it's use by all these YouTube fisherman still with not much said on it.
