What's your favourite hook on the multi rig for pop ups ? Like the look of the krank choddy has anyone used these on their multis and had good results ? Cheers

Don't like chod hooks myself, always found the hook holds are way better on a straight or even better inturned eye. Nash fang twister are my go to hook for the multi

I use esp stuff riggers (size 7) and also a flexi bore ring for attatching the bait . Seems to work well
I like the fox stiff rig straight in a 5 or 6. The Krank choddy is a weak hook in my opinion, only hook I've ever had snap in two.

Yes i like the krank choddy for multi rigs i use size 6 in uk which ive used in and around moderate weed with no probs and 4's in france with no issues.
I wouldn't use them for heavy snag fishing or hit and hold as there are stronger hooks about

Don't think the krank choddy hooks are the one then as the lake I fish is quite snaggy, like the idea of the inturned eye to create a more aggressive angle, I've got some fang twisters and some atomic sabre hooks in my bits box so il tie on up with them and see what they are like

I have had two snap both on the barb.

Noticed that Julian Cundiff uses curve shank hooks on one of his multi rig set ups, anybody used curves on theirs ? Like the look of it, sits really aggressively

Drennan continental for me, rarely lose a fish these days. They are sharp and sharpen easily also.
And I use the same for a stiff link bottom rig so 90% of my fishing is this with hook

I use a curve for the multi and love how it sits. I get cracking hook holds with it and it never looks like it's coming out.

I have settled on the Eagle Claw Trokar hooks, i found they are one of the sharpest hooks straight out of the packet and you can use them more than once. Hand sharpened hooks are sharper but are really only good for one fish.

They seem to be fine in barbless, but there is an issue with the barbed ones.

Mike Kavanagh, the originator of the MR has always recommended long shank hooks. I tend to agree with him
A size 7 atomic sabre is absolutely perfect on a multi rig with a 12 mm pop up, sits very aggressively but still a nice big gape, using it tomorrow so il see how I get on, forgot how sharp them hooks are ! Tied a slip d with them and it looks really good, that's going on one of the other rods 👍
Went out and had 2 on the rig today, absolutely nailed never coming off, that will do nicely 😎

Interesting, everytime I use an LS on a multi, I either have a hookpull or a poor hook hold. I much prefer an out turned eye and beaked point, although I have had a few decent fish on curve shanks with the multi but far more on the out turned eyes.

Think this guy would disagree with MK inventing the multi rig.. https://www.carptalk-online.co.uk/news/1886-who-invented-the-multi-rig Wasn't aware either and always thought it was MK.
Anyway, back to the original question its Nash Fang X or Twisters for me which I self sharpen with stones. Used ever since I saw Julian Cundiffs YouTube video and ironically more recently I've started fishing one of the same waters he fishes and having seen him in action the guy is a machine! He's a nice fella too as it happens.
There may be lots of other hooks that do the job but it works for him and works for me which importantly gives me the confidence I need in my rig without sitting there second guessing myself.
Each to their own. ;-)

one hook I bought to try and was very surprised with is the bank tackle wide gape barbed. Very strong, very sharp out the pack and lasts. I bought these hooks purely as an experiment not expecting them to be much good @£2.50 a pack. I've made up a multi rig out of the first one and had 5 carp on the same hook now and it's still sharp. The coated braid of the rig needs changing now but the hook is great. Any one else used bank tackle to success?

Everytime I use a longshank on any rig I get a hookpull but i hook way more fish.. it must turn really quickly but pulls out easily.

Longshank for me too for single or double bottom baits and snowman. Mostly try and fish snowman if on a single pop up though I use a choddy instead.
I think with longshanks they have to be big too so size 2 or 4 for the decent gape and strength that way no hook pulls.

I'm about to start using this rig and been having a play with a few different hook styles on pop ups.
Tried out turned eyes but just don't like the way the hook stands up. Yes you can manipulate the hooklink but seems more sensible to me to use an inturned eye and not have to worry about that.
Of all the hooks I've tried I like the look of curve shanks and kranks. I reckon the curves will hook more and the kranks will hold more. I know a few use this rig heavily so would appreciate some reassurance if I'm on the right track.

Recently tried the new ESP Trig-Hammer hooks on the multi rigs and they performed very well.
I swapped over from only using J Precision to these as I like the gauge of wire, long point and pattern.
Both bottom baits and pop ups, had fish to 25lb over 4 nights all nailed 0.5" back in the lower lip.
Highly recommended.

that looks a good shout for a long shank. I like the slightly inturned eye.
I don't see the logic of having an out turned eye as often shown with this rig.

Depends what material you are using it with , and what type of presentation you are aiming at .
Imagine a chod rig with an inturned eye , it would close the gape right up , same if you are using stiff material with the multi

on a chod i would say the out turned eye is to prevent line damage due to the fluoro and knotless knot and also to eliminate the risk of the hook drooping right over if the bait ring pivots on the hooklength side of the D more so than anything else, and neither apply on a multi.
just read MK's article and no sign of him using out turned eyes on bottoms, wafters or pop ups.
just my thoughts

Not sure really what you mean , I personally have never tied a chod rig with fluoro I usually use the Korda mouth trap 25lb stuff and curve the chod section to continue the arc from the hook whipping , you wouldn't be able to do that with a curved or straight point hook with that material
I've used the multi rig on and off in various ways to good success for probably 10 years or more , what I was getting at is that various hooks can be used with the multi , be it for pop ups or bottom baits , suit the hook to the material , just my opinion of course

yeah sorry i meant mouthtrap or the like for chods specifically but the point is the out turned eye is necessary due to the rigidity of the hooklink and you curve it to get the hook tilted over, but this isn't the case with a multi rig. Knotless knots with fluoro in particular and in-turned eyes is asking for trouble.
I just don't see the benefit of using an out turn with a multi rig pop up, seems more of a hindrance to me and just doesn't sit right when I've tested it, not for me anyway. I like the hook tilted over at around 45 degrees so it has a better chance of grabbing the lip.

In my use of the multi it depends on what material you are tying it up with , if i am using a heavy stiff coated braid I'll use a chod hook and have a slight curve in the pop up section , whereas if I'm using lighter more flexible material , a straight point or curve with the pop up section straight sits much better for me

Used an Ace chod hook for a few years and never had any issues. I could count on one hand the amount of fish ive dropped. Never really understood the need for tubing on it TBH? As long as the hookling material is a fairly stiff coated braid.

Swapped over to a razor point size 4 curve yday on my multis and was the first time I've lost a fish on a large curve shank this year. Mortified, wondering possible reasons as generally people say curves are solid for hookholds on multi. The fish didn't take any line really just lots of head banging so maybe was a large tench.
Only other thing I can think it may have been due to a fairly short stiff multi, 5 inches boom ultra skin stiff
Any thoughts?
Hook point was fully turned over and loop pulled tight

If the hook point was fully turned over it could be a couple of things.
The hook point was already over when the fish was hooked giving a c***py hook hold. This could be gravel, silvers, crays moving it around.
Or possibly the hook hit bone when the fish was hooked and you got a bad hook hold.
Sometimes s**t happens, I wouldn't be too hasty to blame the hook pattern or rig.

Thanks mate, it's generally one of those waters where if you do get a take its a fish over 25lb and not many other species around. Who knows maybe I just got unlucky
Tied a few more up tonight, decided to go a bit longer and semi stiff this time. Any idea if this is still fairly tangle proof on heli leadcore.
Any other feedback or anything that looks off about the rig please let me know and other comments welcome, bit confidence rocked lately

Sorry, I missed this follow up. How have you been getting on?
The rigs look fine to me. I don't bother with tubing but if it makes you feel happier that it wont slip I don't see an issue.
I had a weird one last night on the multi rig. For the 1st time ever on any rig I had a double hooking. The hook went in the bottom lip and and then stitched up to the top lip.
I cut the shank of the hook with side cutters and thankfully it came out without damage. I was shocked it had happened.
Then the next fish came in with the hook hold on the outside of the top lip. I was baffled, never had this either. I use a chod type hook with a standard length shaft, inch and a half off the bottom. 1st fish was a low thirty and the second was a high double, so pretty different sized mouths.
Caught scores of fish like this with 'normal' hook holds. Possibly just down to the way they were feeding. I changed rigs on both rods just in case I got another weird one.
Interesting that long shanks and Ronnie type rigs get bad rap for double hooking. The multi is widely praised as one of the most reliable and safe rigs around yet that's the one that caused the problem.

Hi mate, haven't had a fish on it yet. Fishing a very hard water I can only do eves on. I actually use the shrink as i found it turned a lot better in my palm. Maybe this isn't really any gauge on the hooking potential
Weird about your hook holds, maybe it was under shotted or something. Will update, I've actually been fishing short hinges instead lately and not sure I see any benefits of the mult for now.
